Dr. Titus Schleyer, DMD, PhD, one of the principals of S3 Web Technologies, has been a part of the ADA's standards-setting efforts from its inception. As chair of the Educational Software Working Group, he was instrumental in developing the ADA Specification No. 1001 Guidelines for the Design of Educational Software. This comprehensive standard offers guidelines for how state-of-the-art and effective educational software should be designed. A draft of the standard has been applied in a study of online continuing dental education courses that established an empirical baseline for instructional quality of such resources. The standard has also been applied in the development of the annual educational software competition sponsored by the American Dental Education Association.
